Periodontal Health
A major component of our patients oral health care involves the gingiva (gums) and the supporting tissues. As part of your exam we will measure your periodontal pocket depths, gingival recession, bleeding points, tooth mobility and many other important features. We utilize this information to make a diagnosis and to prescribe the appropiate level of care.
Your periodontal health is not only important to maintain your teeth but to also maintain your overall health. Heart disease, stroke, and diabetes are all linked to periodontal disease. The role that periodontal disease plays in these illnesses is not well understood but it is recommended that you maintain the health of your gums as best you can. In addition it is recommended that you have your teeth cleaned prior to the placement of artifical joints, and heart surgery.
We take your periodontal health seriously as should you. If you have deep pockets we may recommend scaling and root planing (deep cleaning), a referral to a periodontist, or prescribe various pharmaceutical agents.
