Periodontal Assessment
A clinical periodontal assessment is the gathering of information with the goal of obtaining a complete comprehensive picture of the patient's periodontal health status.
What you can expect from the dentist and/or hygienist is:
A review of your complete dental and medical history.
Discussion of the medications you are taking or other factors that may contribute to periodontal problems.
A review of your FMX (full mouth series of x-rays) either brought in by you from a previous dentist or taken at the time of your appointment.
A measurement of gingival recession which is how much your gums have pulled away from your teeth and have exposed the roots of your teeth.
Periodontal probing, which is a painless technique used to measure the amount of unattached gums you have around your teeth. The instrument used is a small ruler-like instrument that is placed in between your teeth and gums to determine the depth of the periodontal pocket. It is meaured in millimeters. Points of bleeding are also noted because bleeding is a sign of infection.
After all the data has been collected you will be given your periodontal evaluation and any recommendations you may need to healthier gums and teeth.
