The Periodontium
Peri = around; odontos = tooth

The periodontium is the functional system of tissues that surrounds the teeth and attaches them to the jawbone.  These tissues include the gingiva, periodontal ligament, root cementum, and alveolar bone.

The five major functions of the periodontium are:
1.  Provides a tissue seal aound the neck of tooth.
2.  Holds the tissue against the tooth while chewing.
3.  Suspends and maintains the tooth in its socket.
4.  Protects the tooth.
5.  Surrounds and supports the root(s) of the tooth.

Unfortunately, the periodontium can come under attack by bacteria and become diseased.

In our lifetime we will produce about 10,000 gallons of saliva, and as we age our production of saliva decreases making us more prone to periodontal disease.
